PHILIP GEORGE

PHILIP GEORGE One year ago this unknown 22-year-old producer was folding clothes and pulling pints for a living. He is now behind the biggest-selling single of 2015

So is life pretty different for you from this time last year?

You could say that. I was working at the clothing chain Next in the day and behind the bar at a golf club at night.

Now look at my life! Your tune Wish You Were Mine is the biggest-selling record of the year so far and has just gone platinum. What’s the history of the track?

It was made two and a half years ago – I’d just started getting into the house scene and it was really just me messing around, not really thinking about catching a specific sound. Maybe that’s why it’s so glossy.

You started to play music at an early age. How did a seven-year-old get into making sounds?

My sister had an electric keyboard, one of those ’90s ones with about five octaves and 100 preset sounds. I can remember trying to imitate Stevie Wonder’s I Just Called To Say I Love You chorus over and over. My mum obviously heard me and from then I started piano lessons. I guess the musical journey went from there.

Tell us all about the new tune Alone No More…

It’s the second edition of the Philip George series, co-produced with my label A&R Anton Powers! It samples Another Level’s Be Alone No More. It’s a great house track with that organ imprint on it, with an almost RnB twist to it. It’s maybe the last time I’ll use this style, as it’s been used a lot recently by everyone else, but we made this track as a final push – almost like a finale. Hopefully it will get people dancing.

How has your residency at Cream been?

I keep saying this and I shouldn’t, but it felt too easy because it’s only been six months since I broke through. It has been a dream come true.

What has been your biggest tune of the summer?

Is by the CamelPhat lads and their track Constellations. Such an Ibiza anthem for me. It’s not relentless and hard-hitting, it’s just a beautiful tech banger. The breakdowns give me shivers thinking about it.

What has been your craziest night out in Ibiza this summer?

Oh my, the second resident spot at Cream for me was bad. I played my set sober, but afterwards I have a blank for two hours. Apparently I was a right mess, trying to play with the lighting controls and stuff in Amnesia... Oop
