The upcoming fitness GENETIC TESTING, VIRTUAL COACHES AND NEW WAYS TO MONITOR BODYWEIGHT. TECHNOLOGY EMBRACES HEALTH.

The future of fitness is no longer just as simple as going to the gym and eating right. With increasing time constraints and the growth of digital tech, consumers are demanding more and more detail about their wellbeing progress. Over the last few years the upsurge of fitness trackers such as the Fit Bit, Nike Plus, Withings and others has led to many of us finding an easy way to track and record our activity, but what does the future hold for fitness?

Body Composition: we’ve moved from monitoring body weight, to looking at BMI (Body Mass Index), to actually looking at body composition (the ratio of lean mass to body fat). This is the most important measure of your progress as body fat turning into lean muscle means you’ll have more shape, be stronger and feel healthier.

Genetic Testing: It’s been around a few years and is offered here in Ibiza by 38ºN on their retreats, but this year has seen an upsurge in interest in DNA potential: how your genes affect your training and nutrition. Expect to see further growth in this field as individuals look to better understand their training and diet choices and how their own unique genetics come into play.

The test is simple, the results illuminating, including your genetic potential for injury risk, intolerances, aerobic ability, power versus endurance profile and more. Fascinating stuff.

Virtual Training: Online or virtual training has also been around for a few years, but the platforms for delivering it have tended to be quite basic or the training has been delivered via Skype or a similar platform. As the online training industry explodes, new entrants are modelling the experience from scratch and there are host of new platforms coming that can deliver the client a full workout programme. Expect instructional videos, notes from their trainer (that include nutrition and training scheduling) and sync with fitness trackers, eg trainerize.com, fitfixpro.com

Combine all of the above and you have a potent fitness toolkit to understand your own genetic potential, model your body changes and train anytime, anywhere to achieve optimum results. Fitness is definitely getting serious.
