FESTIVAL-SIZED DRUM ‘N’ BASS

SIGMA CAMERON EDWARDS AND JOE LENZIE, AKA DRUM ‘N’ BASS CHART-TOPPERS SIGMA, HAVE HAD AN EXTREMELY BUSY YEAR. AFTER THEIR ANTHEMIC SUMMER CUT ‘NOBODY TO LOVE’ TOPPED THE MAINSTREAM CHARTS ACROSS EUROPE, THEY FOLLOWED IT UP WITH YET ANOTHER NUMBER-ONE HIT, COLLABORATING WITH PALOMA FAITH ON THE EUPHORIC SINGLE ‘CHANGING’. WITH SIGMA GEARING UP FOR YET ANOTHER HECTIC SUMMER IN IBIZA, WE SPEAK TO EDWARDS ABOUT LIFE IN THE DRUM ‘N’ BASS FAST LANE.

Is it true you were thinking about quitting the scene last year?

Yeah, I remember saying to Joe: “If we carry on making this kind of money we’re not going to be able to do this anymore.” It wasn’t like we were depressed or we’d hit rock bottom, but it was a serious conversation about what we were going to do next. Then, randomly, I went into the studio and started fiddling with the Kanye West tune. We ended up using the Charlie Wilson hook and ‘Nobody To Love’ just grew into a monster.

How did Annie Mac get hold of ‘Nobody To Love’?

Initially, we gave the track away for free; we also sent the tune to Annie Mac. Her reply went something like this: “I fucking love it! I’m in the library, I can’t turn it up, but I’m going to start my show with it.” After that, we took it down from the website and went through the process of publishing the track.

How did your life change after the release of ‘Nobody to Love’?

Initially, we were still doing bookings for next to nothing. Then suddenly we were playing in front of festival-sized crowds of up to 15,000. It’s been a learning curve, but we’re really enjoying it.

If Ella Eyre co-wrote the lyrics to ‘Changing’, why did Paloma Faith end up laying down the vocals?

Ella’s vocals sounded amazing, but she had a single out at the same time as ‘Changing’ was due to be released. Then the ‘Paloma Faith idea’ got put on the table. I didn’t think there was any way it would happen as Paloma is so far removed from the drum ‘n’ bass scene. But she listened to the track and loved it.

Did you expect a third number one when you released ‘Higher’?

I think everyone expected our last single with Labrinth to go straight to number one. In a way, it was a good thing it didn’t because it brought people back to reality!

How are you going to attack Ibiza this summer?

We’re playing two DJ sets and a live show at Ibiza Rocks. With the Together parties at Amnesia we can play a little heavier, but we’ll just turn up and play our own style. We’re just happy to add our flavour to what’s already going on.
