JOSE PADILLA ON HIS 40TH DJ ANNIVERSARY AND RETURN TO CAFE DEL MAR

Born in Barcelona in 1955, Jose Padilla moved to Ibiza in 1976 and started DJing in San Antonio, making tapes of his sets and selling them at Es Cana market. On the first day he sold out in an hour. On the second day, he sold sixty tapes. By the late 1980s he was living in a house next door to Café Del Mar, DJing at clubs such as Es Paradis at night and selling 500 tapes a day. In 1991 Café Del Mar asked him to step out of his house and into their DJ booth, where he played until 1999 in front of a hand-made sign saying ‘TAPES’. During the 90´s, he became recognised globally as the founder of chill-out and a pioneer of the balearic sound. After producing the first (and arguably the best) 6 annual compilations for Cafe Del Mar, Padilla left to focus on other projects. He returned to the Sunset Strip this year on May 23 and June 20 and word quickly got around. It seems many were pleased to see the master back on home turf. Often imitated but never surpassed, he talked to ÏU Mag shortly after his first reunion date about his 40th anniversary as a DJ and some of the projects he has lined up for 2014/15.

Congratulations on your 40th year as a DJ Jose. How has the musical landscape of Ibiza changed since you started DJing here?

Everything changed. When I got here in the 70’s I was playing with Lenco turntables, 2 tape recorders and getting electric shocks touching the equipment. A DJ worked all night long, had no guests, and you did the lighting and took care of the sound. You needed to know what you were doing and I loved this. You can take people on a journey. Today, technology has advanced so much and DJs play for 2 hours. It felt more human and organic in the early days. People have a short attention span now. They used to be more relaxed and let you do your thing.

The alchemical combination of electronic music, a sunset and the sea has become a powerful symbol of Ibiza around the world. Why do you think that is?

Not only electronic music for a start. But I think the main reason is it’s a powerful moment in nature and you are playing music for the elements and this can make a perfect moment play with people’s imaginations. All this makes the perfect combination for beautiful music to be appreciated.

Do you have plans to produce another compilation CD for Cafe Del Mar?

You can’t re-create the past. The CDs are very special and next year I’m planning something new that will be very special again.

Can you tell us about some of the projects and releases that you have lined up?

I’ve signed as a recording artist to one of my favourite labels, International Feel. My first single is called ‘Solito’ and will be released in July 2014. There will be a second single in February 2015, followed by my album in early summer 2015. My latest single was released on Secret Life Music in June called ‘Akamundo’, and my only compilation this year was also released on Secret Life Music in June, which I created for Marini’s on 57: a great venue in Kuala Lumpur where I performed on June 12th.
