ANA FERRER I am competIng with myself every hour of the day

How did your journey into handball begin?

I was born and raised in Ibiza and began to play handball in Puig d’en Valls with a team that’s really become my family. Since then I have done all kinds of sports because I love to try new things – but really once I started handball I couldn’t leave it behind and so I dedicated myself to my team.

Where did this obsession with sport begin? Do you come from an athletic family?

My obsession with sport definitely began with my family. They always pushed me to try different sports and I would go with my brothers to different matches. I guess I inherited this freaky addiction with sports through them. I just don’t stop.

You must be very competitive…

I wouldn’t even want to lose playing marbles, but this competitiveness is not only for sport but also for my life. I strive to become better everyday. I am competing all the time, competing with myself for every hour of the day.

When you think of Ibiza you don’t think of sports. Has it been difficult to keep focus?

It’s not hard to focus when doing sports; it’s what makes me happy. I wake up and I start training, even when I’m brushing my teeth I’m doing squats - I’m not joking! Basically I’m always just competing with myself, and I always want to win.

What have been your greatest triumphs in handball?

In the last year that I was together with my team, we became national champions of Spain. This was a beautiful way for us to say goodbye. I have experienced so many joys playing with my team and sweating through countless shirts that I couldn’t begin to name them all.

I have the feeling you are quite an adrenaline junky. What’s one of the craziest things you have ever done?

Skydiving is definitely the craziest thing I have ever done. It was a spectacular experience. I had a very important match the next day, and I played at my absolute best, completely high on adrenaline. I remember I didn’t want to tell my coach why I was playing so well.

What is the next phase in the life of Ana Ferrer?

I have dedicated so much of my life to sports but I think its time to grow in my professional career. I have my degree now, I moved back to Ibiza to live my life differently, to do a bit of travelling, spend time with family and friends and really to create my future.
