EVERY PUSSY IS A WORLD Global freedom has made us become uniform and one can find all sorts of things on the bodies out there, whether it’s a piercing, a sun wheel tattoo on the back of the neck or a shaven pubis in the form of a rhombus or a triangle

Global freedom has made us become uniform and one can find all sorts of things on the bodies out there, whether it’s a piercing, a sun wheel tattoo on the back of the neck or a shaven pubis in the form of a rhombus or a triangle. Genital shaving shouldn’t really frighten people any more, but each shave, each style of pubis, has an implicit irreparable association. Every pussy is a world. On every pubis, one can find a whole generation full of fights and symbolisms. Nobody really knows exactly when mankind decided to start shaving their genitals and return to the cool skin of their infancy, something which seems to be a social convention which somehow slipped into what has long been a culture with the idea a woman ought to be beautiful, clean, perfumed, made-up with red lips and carry eau de toilette. The conquests of the straight razor, disposable razor blades, tweezers, wax or the definitive laser, range from the armpit to the lip, the legs to the nipples and from the perineum to the vulva. And it seems that the social convention is advancing, it is no longer a lifestyle choice, but rather an unavoidable imposition. The style of the garden down there is, therefore, an urgent lifestyle choice, one worth thinking about, making a decision on, and tending (should it require pruning). For some, a shaven groin is elegant, athletic, cooling; for others it is something that is unnatural, where the removed hair loses its primitive function of protecting the skin from contact during sex and what may follow, a shield against the rays of the sun or as a heat detector which prepares and informs of the suitability of the moment for coitus. There are those that make a hairy pubis their personal crusade, such as Cameron Diaz, erected as a prophet of unshaven natural genitals. In ‘Body Book’, her own wellness guide, she dedicates a whole chapter to exalting the pubis, arguing not only the beauty and the need for a covered vagina, but also predicting the catastrophe of the passage of time for a shaven pubis, given that “the labia majora are not immune to the effects of gravity”. It would seem that in light of the shaven vagina and Brazilian floral brought to us by the latest pornography, pubic hair has once more come into a golden age where it claims itself as an attribute of sexual identity and new femininity. This ‘renaissance’, in addition to theories such as those of Diaz, have their paragon in fashion, such as the manikins of American Apparel, which show off a generous, artificial bush under their panties in the window displays of the New York boutique, or its situationist version, in the form of the ‘Project Bush’ campaign by the Mother London agency, where the photographer Alisa Connan photographed a panegyris of the wild pubes of anonymous models. Gentleness, imposed coquetry, sensation -or imposition- of hygiene, the shaving of the pubis gives rise to a new creativity (such as the pubes shaven and decorated in the style of Jennifer Love-Hewitt, the so-called vajazzling), and hides the surprise for the hairy or immaculate like one unwrapping a sweet. Although for many, eroticism is on the outside, remember that “The most lascivious of Goya’s ‘majas’ is Clothed Maja”.

NOTA DE LA REDACCIÓN We wonder why text from Martin is much longer than Maria’s. Does size matter to us?
